Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, speaking at AllThingsD‘s Dive into Mobile conference, has said that the company’s free mobile operating system Android is well on its way to hitting 1 billion activations. He has also pointed out that Google expects to hit 2 billion activations for Android in the next year or so, thanks to low-end phones featuring the OS.

“Our goal with Android is to reach everyone. We’ll cross one billion Android devices in six to nine months,” said Schmidt.

“In a year or two, we’ll hit two billion. And the way that’s going to happen is with the debut of low-end devices from manufacturers, primarily in Asia. If low-end smartphones are inexpensive now, imagine just how inexpensive they’ll be a few years from now. A relatively inexpensive smartphone with a browser is all you need to get the world’s information. And that’s how we’re going to hit the next billion devices.”

Android reached the 500 million activations milestone in September last year, boasting 1.3 million activations daily at the time. That number has climbed, according to Schmidt, to 1.5 million activations a day.
