Apple is reportedly looking at options that will allow the company to stop relying on Intel’s processors in the Mac range of computers.
A report from Bloomberg, citing “people familiar with the company’s research”, claims that Apple’s engineers believe that the current range of mobile chips that the company produces will eventually be able to power its desktop and laptop computers, though it is pointed out that Intel CPUs will remain a feature of Macs for the next few years at least.
The projected idea is that eventually all of Apple’s devices should feature a similar chip architecture, something which would only be brought about by using a similar range of chips across those devices. Apple has been acquiring chip manufacturers recently so an eventual move along these lines will likely make sense for Cupertino.
Apple spokesman Bill Evans declined to comment on Apple’s future plans when queried and Intel referred queries to Apple.
