Facebook’s Sponsored Stories ad campaign, which saw user actions on Facebook being converted into advertisements for various companies, will be phased out of existence a little later this year. 9 April seems to be the the effective final date for Sponsored Stories, according to the company.
The social network revealed this information through a platform roadmap announcement which lists several Ad API changes in addition to saying that “Domain and open graph sponsored stories will no longer be allowed to be created. Existing domain and open graph sponsored stories will cease to have delivery after April 9th.”
The Verge points out that Facebook has had some trouble with the Sponsored Stories feature of the social network, having recently settled a class-action lawsuit related to the function, so they probably aren’t sad to see it go. More than a few users will also be pleased that they’re not going to be appearing in adverts as of April.
