If you haven’t made your mind up in the 2017 smartphone awards just yet then you may want to hold your horses. The newly-announced LG G6+ is on its way and it’s set to be the phone that LG should have released the first time around.

The LG G6+ is (obviously) an upgrade on the G6. The specs aren’t in for a major bump in terms of processor and RAM — those aren’t going to be changing from the current Snapdragon 821/4GB RAM configuration and LG are keeping their excellent QHD+ display in place. Ditto the dual camera setup.

The G6+ will be combining features from the American and Korean versions of the G6 into a single unit, though. From the States comes the ability to charge the device wirelessly and from Asian models comes a new quad-DAC that will amp up the handset’s sound capabilities. Add to this a standard storage size of 128GB onboard and some bundled B&O headphones and you’re looking at the G6 LG should have given us on the first trip around.

The big question is: will it be enough to go toe-to-toe with the likes of this year’s likely winner, the Samsung Galaxy S8 (or the S8 Plus)? The answer to that is a resounding “Probably not”, but that’s the on-paper comparison talking. It’s definitely got a shot at closing the gap between LG and its South Korean rival but we’re reserving final judgement until we actually get some hands-on time.

The LG G6+ is set to launch later this year, in three new colours (Optical Astro Black, Optical Marine Blue, and Optical Terra Gold), with no pricing or availability known for South Africa (or anywhere else) just yet. We’ll keep you posted.
