Seeing a tablet version of a smartphone isn’t anything unusual, Samsung does it all the time. What is a bit stranger is a tablet that is for all intents and purposes the same as the smartphone it is based on – aside from the ability to make calls, that it. Sony is doing it however, announcing that a new WiFi-only Xperia Z Ultra is on the way.
The standard Xperia Z Ultra is the very definition of a phablet but Sony’s new version removes the ‘ph’ from the equation by dropping its cellular capabilities. Just why the company has opted to go this way is uncertain but they’ve kept all of the other specs for the standard Ultra in place. It still features the same processor (Snapdragon 800), display (6.4-inch) and profile (6.5mm) while hanging onto that lovely underwater capability.
The tweaked device is Japan-only for the moment, with no details regarding a release for the tablet elsewhere at present. A conversion of the price of the soon-to-be-released Japanese phone tablet brings it to R5,500. Not a bad purchase price for a waterproof, compact tablet.
