How long does it take to break a world record? For that matter, how much space do you need to break a world record? A Swiss team, fielding their ‘grimsel’ electric vehicle, has broken the world electric car acceleration record without using much of either.
Thirty students from the Academic Motorsports Club Zurich (AMZ), competing in the Formula SAE competition, have broken the world acceleration record for an electric vehicle. The speed? 100km/h. The time taken to get from 0 to 100km/h? That’d be a mere 1.513 seconds, less time than it took for this page to load. The car? An unassuming little race car which looks like it’s not much of anything. Except for the massive wing and the all-wheel drive and the torque vectoring…
The record-breaking footage doesn’t look that impressive on the surface either, come to that. You’ll see the stellar buildup in the video above and then see just how short 1.5.13 seconds actually is. The ‘grimsel’ only needs 30 metres to reach 100km/h, which isn’t nearly as impressive as taking over an entire runway for a video. Except the driver is hit with 1.8g’s over this space. But, on the up side, this little race car will do the ton in a long driveway. Or maybe even a short one. Leave the gate open.
